1803 $10 Small Stars Reverse MS63 NGC.
1803 $10 Small Stars Reverse MS63 NGC. Breen-6844, B. 1-A, Taraszka-28, R.4. The total mintage of the various varieties of 1803 Eagles is 15,017 pieces, a relatively high figure within the context of the series, but still much lower than the more obtainable 1799 or 1801 issues. When located, the typical 1803 Ten Dollar is only XF or AU, and strict Mint State pieces can be considered very scarce. It is assumed from the evidence in mint records that the Small Stars Eagles were struck sometime in the late summer or early fall of 1803. After gold and silver prices began to climb and soon exceeded the face value of U.S. coins, many were hoarded and later melted. As a result, only a tiny percentage of this lesser seen date are estimated to have survived the melting pots. Offered here is a wondrously preserved early Heraldic Eagle Ten Dollar, featuring bright yellow-gold surfaces that are boldly struck through the centers and show occasional softness on the peripheral details, including an invariably weak area where the arrow shafts are attached to the eagle's claw. Die clashing is quite distinct on the reverse, rendering a slight "horned eagle" effect, as often seen on B. 1-A examples. Wispy adjustment marks are noticed in various places about the obverse periphery. There are no large or reportable marks on either side of this desirable early Ten Dollar, just a few paper thin luster grazes here and there. Population: 10 in 63, 5 finer (11/03). Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
