1803<$10> Small Stars Reverse MS63 NGC. Breen 1-D, Taraszka-26, BD-1, High R.5. Six known varieties of 1803 eagles were coined from a single obverse die, combined with six different reverse dies. A number of similar occurrences within all denominations combine one die with multiple partners. The single die (sometimes called a workhorse die) is almost always the obverse, although there are exceptions. A single 1794 large cent reverse was coupled with six different obverse dies for example. Possibly the most famous exception is the Small Eagle silver dollar reverse die that was mated with six different obverse dies spanning four different years.
This particular variety, with a total estimated population of just over 30 coins, is an important rarity in the series of early eagle varieties. In his years of collecting, Harry Bass was only able to acquire one example, a coin that is on display at the American Numismatic Association in Colorado Springs, and probably the only piece that exceeds this example for quality. This example has sharp details on both sides, with brilliant and highly lustrous green-gold frost. The central obverse and the left border of the obverse each have light adjustment marks that occurred when the weight of the planchet was being fine tuned before it was struck. A few minor abrasions on each side of this piece serve to limit the grade and yet the overall eye appeal is exceptional, being enhanced by pale orange toning toward the borders. NGC has only certified five finer examples of this date (9/06) while this example is probably the second finest of the die variety.
