1803<1/2 C> C-4, B-4, High R.3. Die State 1. AU55 NGC. VF30 EAC. Close date, 03 crowded; Six berries left. This is the Manley Plate Coin for the variety. It is generally recognized by specialists that this particular variety was not struck in 1803, but rather in 1805. This has been determined by an intricate and detailed study of the individual letter and numeral punches used to create the various reverse dies of the Draped Bust design. While a complete discussion is beyond the scope of the present catalog, the interested reader should turn to Walter Breen's Half Cent Encyclopedia, pages 209-12. If we were to follow the emission sequence of these coins, this lot would be presented immediately after 1805 C-2.
This is another variety that has come down in rarity with time. Cohen originally gave this a R.4 rating, but it is now considered R.3+. Still, high grade examples are not often seen, with coins in grades better than XF being particularly elusive. This example is Breen Die State II with reverse clash marks. His die state I, without clash marks on the reverse, probably does not exist. The reverse is rotated counterclockwise about 145 degrees from the normal coin turn alignment, or not quite inverted. At least one other example is known with a similar rotation. The surfaces of this example are generally pleasing with olive-brown color, slightly darker devices, and splashes of maroon on both sides.
