1803<1/2 C> C-2, B-2, High R.4. Die State 7--Corroded--NCS. Fine Details. VG8 EAC. Close date, 03 crowded; Wide fraction. The die state normally seen with a full rim break over STAT. This is clearly the rarest 1803 variety, although its rarity has diminished over the years. Currently considered Rarity-4+, at one time it was thought to be extremely rare. Walter Breen stated: "This variety was for long believed an extreme rarity. Most of the examples which lowered it first to R-6 and then to R-5 were cherrypicked in the last two decades by specialists, and a sizable minority were perfect die coins mistaken for No. 1 or unattributed by their owners." Most of those recent finds are in low grades. The finest known is still XF, followed by four VF grade coins, and then down to Fine and below.
Although considered VG8 overall by specialists, this example is still probably in the top 10% of those known. The devices are medium brown with darker color in the fields. Both sides are covered with light porosity, but there are no other significant imperfections. The surfaces may have been lightly burnished at one time.
Ex: Daru Coin Co. (1/1979); Jim McGuigan (4/17/1987). Envelope Included.
