1803<1/2 C> C-1, B-1, R.1. Die State 3. MS62 Brown NGC. AU50 EAC. Close date, 03 crowded; Fraction bar extended right. This is the Manley Plate Coin for the main illustration of 1803 C-1, and also for Die State 3. The left and right obverse fields are bulged, and appear halo-like per Manley. Breen might have borrowed from his St. Patrick coinage descriptions and named this the Nimbus Variety. Only remnants of the dentilation appear on each side. The obverse does not have any die chips, cracks, or breaks. The reverse is shattered with several prominent die cracks. A crack curves across the reverse from the border and left side of the first T in STATES, to the left branch of the wreath, the top of F in HALF, the right branch, and the base of AM, back to the border. A second crack begins at the first near the top of L, and curves down through the base of L, the left top of N, the right bottom of E, the left branch, and N of UNITED. Cracks are also visible through the tops of ITED and MER, as described by Breen for his Die State VI.
Mint State 1803 Half Cents of any variety are highly desired and seldom encountered. Although Breen said that "dozens" of Mint State 1803 C-1 Half Cents are known, we believe that this comment is a little optimistic. It might be the case that one or two dozen exist, but certainly not many more than that. The surfaces are attractive chestnut and steel brown. It could be stated that tinges of mint color appear here and there, but few would actually notice its presence. The surfaces are generally pleasing with only a couple insignificant marks.
Ex: Dill (11/17/1970). Envelope Included.
