1802 S$1 Narrow Date XF45 ICG. B-5, BB-242, R.5. Die State II. Bowers labeled this as his "Normal Date" while Bolender termed it his "Wide Perfect Date." Regardless, the 1802 B-5, BB-242 is the rarest die variety from 1802, and specimens grading XF45 and above should be considered "Near Condition Census," or possibly even candidates for the low end of the Condition Census. The last John Reich Journal early Dollar census (member collections as of 2002) listed only three examples of this rare variety in AU. The surfaces have even medium gray toning over both sides with underlying golden patina. Some surface roughness is noted on the reverse and each side shows several dark, shallow planchet depressions. A bit softly struck over the highpoints. From the Albany Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
