1802 S$1 Narrow Date MS65 NGC. B-6, BB-242, R.1. One o 1802[S$1] Narrow Date MS65 NGC.
1802<S$1> Narrow Date MS65 NGC. B-6, BB-242, R.1. One of the very Finest Known of this date, and in fact, one of the Finest Bust Dollars of all dates. The surfaces are exemplary in their quality, and have the appearance of a Morgan silver dollar instead of a Bust dollar. It is simply amazing that any coin from this period could survive in such superlative and excellent condition. Toned an even light gold to steel-gray, with areas of more vibrant orange-gold near the rims. The color is fairly even throughout, with hints of blue on the reverse mixed with the predominate light steel-gray. There are no adjustment marks present. Boldly struck by the dies, with strong definition on Liberty's curls and on the eagle. Even the stars, both obverse and reverse, show their central radial lines save for a couple on either side, which is much better than often encountered for this variety. For identification purposes, we note the following tiny nicks or marks, there is a faint pin line from her forehead down behind her eye to her cheek below, a tiny bright speck between LI, a tick on the left side of the 0 in the date, a shallow nick in the field below the right claw of the eagle and a couple of scrapes in the small field below UNUM. These will help trace the pedigree of the present coin in the future.
The Narrow Date variety is one of the more plentiful issues of this series. A few were saved as the last of their kind as this date is actually known to survive in grades up to the present Gem example. However, there are not that many out there, and there is constant and strong demand from type and variety collectors, as well as the Registry collectors who need an example of this variety for the Narrow Date issue. The combined NGC and PCGS Population Reports show a total of 9 pieces graded this high, and importantly, none are graded finer by either grading service, confirming that the present coin is tied with this select group as one of the Finest Known of the variety.
From The Jack Lee Collection, III
