This is one of the most common early silver dollar varieties, and even a number of Mint State examples are known. The present specimen is a remarkable representative of this issue. Only two die varieties are known for the 1802 Normal Date coins, from distinct obverse dies. This obverse has the right base of T missing entirely, and it is a common variety. The other variety, a much scarcer die marriage, has an obverse with a well-formed, perfect T in LIBERTY. The reverse is a common die used for silver dollars dated 1801, 1802, and 1803.<BR> Sharply struck with strong obverse and reverse details, and exceptional eye appeal. This example has rather prooflike surfaces with a hint of champagne and iridescent toning over silver brilliance. A few insignificant adjustment marks are evident along the lower obverse border.
