25 July 1802 letter on Bonaparte First Consul stationery signed boldly ''Bonaparte'' by Napoleon. Letter is to Councillor of State Jean-Etienne-Marie Portalis requesting that a report be drawn up to explain why certain bishops made non-approved appointments. Reads in part: ''...How [does it happen] that the Bishops permit themselves to appoint curates without the government having reviewed them?...Which is contrary to article 10 of the concordat...'' Two pages. Some separation at folds, else very good.
