1802 Large Cent S-242 MS62
Large Cents 1802 S-242 R2 MS62. Highly lustrous light steel brown with delicate overtones of bluish steel and generous traces of mint red in protected areas, especially on the reverse. There are a half dozen faint splashes of darker steel toning on the obverse, the most notable of these on the curl just left of the shoulder. The only marks are a very tiny speck of dark slag in the planchet in the field under the L in LIBERTY, a tiny hairline scratch high on the neck, and another hairline scratch meandering down from the foot of the F in OF. None of these trivial defects is visible without a good glass, and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. The mint flash is exceptional and the frosty luster covers even the highest points of the design. LDS, Breen state III. Finest known, the only mint state example of the variety. Not listed by Bland or Noyes as this is a new discovery. Ex W. G. Crowther (Boston Coin Co.) circa 1890-Fred Crowther (son) circa 1960 to John M.
