Large Cents 1802 S-240 R3+ EF45+. Glossy bluish steel brown with generous traces of faded mint red in the protected areas. There is a small area of darker chocolate toning right of the Y and a smaller one at the dentils under the 0 in the date. The only notable signs of contact are a short, faint hairline scratch hidden in the hair left of the eye, a microscopic pinprick on the neck near the middle curl, a dull nick over E in CENT, and a tiny rim tick at the second A in AMERICA. A bit softly struck at the bust tip and opposing area at the O in OF. E-MDS, Breen state II, a rare earlier die state for this variety. The obverse die clashmarks are bold but the crack up through the bust has not formed. The obverse fields are smooth and slightly reflective. This is the plate coin in the Noyes and Breen books. Called AU50 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says AU50 sharpness but net EF40 (reason for deduction unknown) and has it tied for CC#1. A beautiful example of a scarce variety in a tough die state. Ex New Netherlands Coin Co.-John J. Ford, Jr. 10/8/70-C. Douglas Smith-Dr. Robert A.
