1802 Large Cent S-237 MS62+
Large Cents 1802 S-237 R3 MS62+. Choice glossy tan and light brown with traces of original mint red in protected areas of the reverse. There is a small spot of reddish brown toning in the field at the junction of the bust and neck, plus a few microscopic planchet chips on the cheek (as struck) and an extremely faint hairline scratch in the field left of the lower curls. Outstanding luster and eye appeal. E-MDS, Breen state III. The reverse is plated in Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy and both sides are plated in the Noyes and Breen books. Graded MS62 and called CC#2 by Bland. Noyes calls it MS63 and finest known by a good margin. A beautiful cent either way. (Note: It may be interesting to contrast our matter-of-fact description with the more literary one written by Doug Smith for the Stack's catalog of the Milton A. Holmes collection, 10/1960, lot 1427, where this cent was described as follows: "Mint State-65 +. Lot 377, Newcomb Sale, described by Macallister as: 'Uncirculated, red on both sides. Sharp, even impressions and superior to the specimen illustrated in Newcomb. Both dies lightly cracked. Gem Cent.' The mint red has toned on the obverse to a dazzingly beautiful honey and buckwheat, luminous and almost three-dimensional as hidden fires flash from its seemingly translucent depths when the coin is rotated. Considerable adhesions of golden mint bloom festoon the leaves and letters of the reverse. The surfaces are next to perfection, exhibiting for the hyper-critical only a few miniscule keg marks. Only the latter, and the fact that its color has toned from blazing mint red to what many may regard as much more beguiling hues, prevent us from according this magnificent piece the ultimate accolade of Mint State-70. It is certainly the finest S-237 extant and one of the stars of the sale. We will not even attempt an estimate, any price paid for an early Large Cent of this caliber is a bargain." Whew! Now that's real cataloging. Where's my checkbook?) Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau & Co. #458, 2/45:377-Milton A. Holmes, Stack's 10/60:1427-Dorothy Paschal-Dr. William H.
