1802 Large Cent S-236 MS60
Large Cents 1802 S-236 R1 MS60. Glossy tan and light brown with darker steel brown toning on the highest points and golden tan faded down from mint color in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and lustrous. There is a thin diagonal nick touching the curl on the cheek and a couple very faint hairline scratches over the hair ribbon. E-MDS, Breen state III. This attractive cent has enjoyed lots of attention over the years, having been the plate coin in Newcomb (reverse only), Sheldon, Noyes, and Breen. Called MS65 by Noyes and tied for CC#1 in his 1991 book on the early dates, but listed as AU55 and tied for CC#2 in his 1999 census booklet. Bland calls it MS63 and AU55 in the new Breen book where it comes in as #2 or tied for #5. MS60 and tied for CC#2 appears to be a reasonable position. Ex George C. Carlton, Thomas L.
