1802 Large Cent S-233 AU58+
Large Cents 1802 S-233 R2+ AU58+. Lustrous bluish steel brown with generous traces of faded mint red in protected areas of the reverse. The obverse has a sprinkling of extremely faint spots of slightly lighter brown toning, but you have to get the light at just the right angle to see them. Virtually mint state, just the barest hint of rub on the highest points of the design. There are about a half dozen small, very light nicks on the cheek, neck, and in the field before the face, plus a dozen or so microscopic planchet flakes or voids in the same areas, as struck. Similar tiny low spots or planchet flakes are found around ON and CE in ONE CENT, also as struck. The rest of the surfaces are satiny and flawless. E-MDS, Breen state II. Very sharply struck and quite attractive with the eye appeal of a choice mint state cent. Called AU55 and tied for CC#1 status with one other piece in the Bland census, but that other coin has significant rim bruises and is netted as EF45 in the Noyes census. Noyes calls this piece AU55 and finest known by a full 10 points. The reverse is plated in Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy, and both sides are plated in the Noyes and Breen books. Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau & Co. #458 2/45:362-Judge Thomas L.
