Large Cents 1802 S-231 R1 MS60. Stemless Wreath. Glossy chocolate and steel brown with frosty lighter steel brown toning in protected areas. The surfaces are lustrous and very attractive, suggestive of a higher grade, but there is a small chip out of the rim of the planchet opposite the neck and opposing area over the left top of M, as struck. The only other defect is a very faint hairline scratch extending from the lower lip to the throat and partway down the neck. MDS, Breen state IV (the Breen book says state III, which is incorrect). Not quite fully struck at the bust tip and opposing area at F in OF. Plated in the new Breen book. Called MS60 and tied for CC#4 by Bland. Noyes also says MS60 but lists it as tied for CC#2. Ex Henry C. Hines-Homer K. Downing, 1952 ANA Sale, New Netherlands Coin Co. #38, lot 1904-C.
