Large Cents 1802 S-230 R1 MS60+. Choice glossy chocolate brown with frosty lighter steel brown toning and peeps of golden tan faded down from mint color in protected areas. The surfaces are smooth and virtually flawless. The only identifying mark is a very tiny planchet flake hidden in the hair left of the forehead. MDS, Breen state V. Covered with an extremely thin coat of lacquer or similar protectant to preserve its beauty, but the coating (which could easily be removed) is what keeps this cent from an even higher grade. This is the only mint state example of the variety known. Plated in Newcomb, Noyes, Penny Whimsy, and Breen. Called MS60 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes has it as MS60+ choice and CC#1. A truly beautiful cent! Ex Dr. George P. French, B. Max Mehl FPL 1929, lot 281-Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau & Co. #458, 2/45:350-Hollinbeck Stamp & Coin Co. privately 5/5/49-C.
