Large Cents 1802 S-229 R2+ MS62. Glossy steel brown with frosty light brown toning in protected areas and underlying mint luster covering both sides. There are a couple microscopic ticks on the eyebrow and cheekbone, plus a tiny planchet flake in the field touching the lowest curl, as struck. This flake is surrounded by a small area of slightly darker steel toning. MDS, Breen state III. The arc crack through ERTY is strong and the obverse die clashmarks are clear. A sharp, very attractive mint state example. Called MS61 and tied for finest known honors in the Bland census. Noyes says MS63 choice and alone at CC#1. Doug Smith owned both of the mint state examples that reside outside the ANS, and he considered this example to be the better of the two. Plated in the Noyes and Breen books. Ex Thomas L.
