1802 Large Cent S-226 MS60+
Large Cents 1802 S-226 R3 MS60+. Attractive lustrous bluish light steel brown with peeps of faded mint red on the reverse. The best identifying mark is a tiny speck of dark crud on the front edge of the neck, but this possibly could be popped off leaving this cent virtually defect-free. MDS, Breen state III, with new die clashmarks on both sides and a crack at AMER. (The Breen book says this piece is state I, but this is an error.) The obverse fields are covered with fine, nearly vertical die polishing lines. Struck very slightly off center to K-5 on the obverse, K-10 on the reverse. Listed by Bland as MS61 and finest known. Noyes says MS60+ and finest known, as well. Plated in the new Breen cent book. Another beautiful 1802 cent. Ex Carl Wurtzbach, Barney Bluestone #76, 4/1943:1688-Judge Thomas L. Gaskill-New Netherlands Coin Co., privately 11/56-Dorothy Paschal, 1972-Del Bland 10/72-C. Douglas Smith-Dr. Robert A.
