1802<H10C>--Damaged, Bent--ANACS. Fair Details, Net Poor 1. V-1, LM-1, the only known dies, R.5. The 1802 Half Dime is unquestionably one of the first issues that comes to mind when making a list of the rarest silver issues in the 210-year span since their initial production. From an initial mintage of just 3,060 pieces, a figure that could easily have included pieces which were either back-dated or post-dated as was a common practice in the early years of the Mint, most specialists agree that no more than 40 to 50 pieces are extant. The rarity of the 1802 is further emphasized by the fact that deceptive electrotype counterfeits are known. While the irregularly worn example offered here ranks among the worst known survivors, this actually makes it accessible to a larger group of numismatists who would like to include an example of this great rarity in their collection. The planchet of this mostly bright silver-gray representative was severely bent at one time and later straightened. Fortunately, the reverse of the coin is the side that suffered the most, being worn smooth and displaying numerous small digs. Similar light pockmarks are noted on the obverse, but much of the detail was spared, including the final 3 digits of the date. The upper loop of the familiar nearly closed 2 that touches the portrait is unmistakable.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
