The 1802 Half Dime is a famous rarity among Draped Bust issues, along with the 1804 Dollar and the 1796 and 1797 Half Dollars. From an initial mintage of just 3,060 pieces, a figure that could easily have included pieces which were either back-dated or post-dated as was a common practice in the early years of the Mint, most specialists agree that perhaps only a few dozen examples have survived, generally in low grades. This rough and wavy representative has a bold date and LIBERTY, and about three quarters of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is crisp. Dark gray peripheral color is associated with past exposure to heat, and the back of Liberty's neck has a tooled surface. These problems only serve to bring the present piece within the budgets of advanced (but not independently wealthy) numismatists.
