1802 Bust 10C NGC AU55
1802 Draped Bust Dime. NGC graded AU-55. The date logotype on this dime variety appears to be identical to that used for the 1802 quarter eagle. Interestingly, the quarter eagle has often been called an 1802/1 overdate in past literature, while we do not recall any instances of the dime being called an overdate. The lower right serif of this digit is connected to the diagonal by a short die line while the upper left curve is connected to the opposite side of the diagonal by a second die line. It is these features that led some to call the quarter eagle an overdate. It is our opinion that these merely represent slight defects to the date punch and in no manner suggest that this is an 1802/1 overdate.

A superb specimen of a very tough early dime. Frosty silver gray surfaces with luster present and somewhat grayer in the fields. A smattering of tiny contact points may be seen under magnification, many of which may have preexisted striking; we note only one on Liberty's throat for identification although some might want to add another, a scuff from the shield into the left wing on the reverse. Some light hairlines are visible as well, but the overall eye appeal is just superb -- this is a really nice early dime even before factors like rarity and die state are considered.

This piece is likely Condition Census for this rare variety, as the JR book notes that the finest specimen seen was an AU-55 that was formerly in the R.L. Miles collection. NGC has certified only one Mint State specimen! The rarity of the 1802 date is famous, and we expect competition for a coin of this remarkable quality will be fierce. Pop 1; 1 finer in 62.
