1802 50C MS60 NGC.
1802 50C MS60 NGC.<p>O-101, the only known dies, R.1. The reverse die that the Philadelphia Mint used to produce all 29,890 1802-dated Draped Bust Half Dollars was first used in 1801 mated to the single obverse die of that delivery. Despite the limited original mintage, the 1802 is "only" a scarce date (per Overton), but most survivors are circulated to one degree or another. In fact, NGC and PCGS combined have seen just three coins in all Mint State grades (9/01), the finest being a pair (resubmissions?) of PCGS-certified MS62s. This Uncirculated representative is overlaid in mottled olive-gold, tan, and slate-gray iridescence, through which traces of satin luster shine at most angles. The impression is nicely centered on both sides and the central features are crisply detailed. A coin that would form the centerpiece of any Bust Half Dollar collection. This lot includes the original envelope in which this coin was purchased from New England Coin Company, Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio. The buyer at the time (March, 1966) was Ray F. Spring of Athens, Ohio, and two letters from Henry J. Berube of New England Rare Coin Company, Inc. are also included. According to one of these letters, Spring had to pay $1,150 to acquire this coin, an offer he had to "jump on" as Berube had "two other clients request this same piece." Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
