1802<$2 1/2> AU Details, Obverse Tooled, NCS. B-4, Breen-6118, Bass-3009, R.4. Among the early gold coinage, the quarter eagle was the least accepted and least popular denomination. So few were coined that these coins were seldom seen in circulation, and at the same time, bankers did not like them for they were too difficult to handle when compared to Half Eagles and Eagles. This left melting in the bullion dealer's pot as the only alternative, thus few have survived today. Mint records suggest that 3,035 examples were coined, and a little less than 10% of that number is believed to exist today. All of those coins were produced from a single obverse die and three different reverse dies.
This example has bright yellow-gold surfaces on both sides, and the obverse has been extensively tooled to eliminate some unknown defects. The reverse appears pristine with pleasing green-gold color and fully prooflike fields. The central design on both sides is weakened due to inadequate striking pressure.
