1802<10C> JR-4, R.4. Good 4 NGC. Terminal die state. Medium silver-gray and attractive for the grade. This is the terminal die state with the very advanced retained cud spanning an arc from star seven through BE of LIBERTY. Sharply impressed on the devices although there is weakness on the stars behind the eagle's head, as usual for the variety. Certainly less than a dozen show this retained cud, one seen in VF, another in Fine, then a couple are known in this grade range. For the die state specialist, this coin is a prize that would be difficult to duplicate. Apparently the die failed quickly once the die crack formed, with the upper section pulling away from the plane of the die, greatly weakening the devices and fields in this area. We have not seen a full cud where there is no device detail within the broken portion of the die, but a few could certainly exist. A premier opportunity for the specialist.
Ex: Delaware Valley Coins (September 1984). Envelope Included.
