1802<10C> JR-2, R.5--Damaged, Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details. Reiver state b. The obverse and reverse have extensive hairline scratches from cleaning with an abrasive, and areas appear to have been smoothed on the upper right obverse and lower right reverse. Several moderate scratches are found above the olive branch. On the obverse there are five small pits punched into the coin, one above Liberty's bust, three together between the second star and her curls, and the final one at the outer point of the first star. An interesting coin which was obtained to show the later reverse die state. There is a strong die crack from the rim to the second feather of the right wing down into the shield and out through the arrow feathers. A branching die crack extends from the right top point of the shield vertically through the two stars above. Another die crack splits the I of AMERICA to the olive leaves. Of interest is that this reverse die continued in service and shatters while coining the 1802 dimes, and more remarkably was used later in 1803 to coin additional pieces all of which show extensive shattering and die cracks. While not the most alluring dime in the collection, it does have a good pedigree and shows strong device details.
Ex: Superior's Ruby Sale (February 1974), lot 901; Stack's (May 1984) lot 755; Steve Sawyer (January 1988). Envelope Included.
