1802/1<S$1> Wide Overdate. B-3, BB-234, R.3. AU55 NGC. Wide overdate, 80 wider than 18 or 02; Outer arrow point below left upright of N. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state III. This is the Reiver plate coin for the obverse and reverse of this variety. A satiny coin that boasts ample luster and a decent strike on the central devices, but some of the stars lack their radial points on the right side. The surfaces are clean and attractive for the grade, with scattered handling ticks and hairlines expected for the grade. A blush of light gold toning on the obverse, more pronounced on the reverse with areas of speckled gray-gold. One of the more plentiful die pairings of the year, and always in good demand for the bold overdate feature.
When the present coin was last sold in December, 1974, Stack's catalogued this as "A strong Very Fine, deep iridescent toning.". Yes times have changed, but these classic early silver dollars remain one of the most popular series in American numismatics. A lovely coin which is probably close to or just within the Condition Census for the variety.
Ex: Stack's W. Earl Spies Collection (December, 1974), lot 223. Envelope Included.
