Overdates exist for several different denominations dated 1802, including the 1802/0 half cent, this silver dollar issue, and the 1802/1 half eagle. Among coins of these three denominations, eight physical obverse dies are known for the overdate coinage. There are five different overdated obverse dies for the silver dollars alone! The Mint obviously prepared several additional obverse dies in 1801, in anticipation of a coinage that never occurred. This piece has medium gray-brown color with lighter gray on the devices and darker steel in the fields.
