1802/1 S$1 Wide Date Fine 12 PCGS. B-9, BB-235, R
1802/1<S$1> Wide Date Fine 12 PCGS. B-9, BB-235, R.5. A rare variety among early dollars. According to the Bowers Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, Bolender-9 was not discovered until 1950, when an example appeared in the Marmaduke Fox collection. It is distinguished by a die flaw below the B in LIBERTY and by the evenly spaced digits of the date. The obverse die appears only with this variety. Housed in a first generation PCGS holder, the present early dollar has lavender-gray fields and pale lilac-brown devices. The obverse has a minor rim ding at 7 o'clock, and the reverse has a few tiny abrasions below the M in UNUM. Nicely defined for the grade, this lot presents an affordable opportunity to obtain this marriage that is unlikely to be duplicated any time soon.
