<B>1802/1 S$1 Narrow Date VF20 PCGS.</B></I> B-2, BB-233, R.4. Die State I. Wide overdate, 18 widely spaced, 80 closer, 02 closest; projection at lower right curve of D. Apparently always with perfect dies in this die marriage. The reverse die was used for seven different varieties dated 1801, 1802, and 1803. Thus we have two reverse dies that were "workhorse" dies, used for 13 different varieties out of 16 total for the three dates. Recognition of these two reverse dies is the first step in an attribution scheme for the various varieties coined in these three years.<BR> The absence of a die crack from the border right of the final S (see 1801 B-4) tells us that this variety was struck before the 1801 B-4 silver dollar. Both sides have pleasing grayish-gold color with light gray on the devices. Certainly cleaned long ago, but beginning to reacquire an attractive and natural patina. The usual scattered marks are present, with a thin scratch down from Liberty's top curls to the cheek.<BR><I>Ex: I.
