1802/1 S$1 Narrow Date AU50 PCGS. B-4, BB-232, R.3 1802/1[S$1] Narrow Date AU50 PCGS.
1802/1<S$1> Narrow Date AU50 PCGS. B-4, BB-232, R.3. Sometimes called the Close Date variety. It took just two reverse dies to coin seven different die varieties bearing the 1802 date, and both of these reverse dies were also used in 1801 and 1803. Each of these reverse dies are mated to seven different obverse dies over the course of three years' production. Due to this rigorous die usage, we can actually determine rather definitively the actual order that all of these coins were produced. The reverse die for this variety was used to coin the following dates and varieties, in order from earliest to latest: 1802/1 BB-231, BB-232, 1801 BB-212, 1802 BB-241, 1803 BB-253, BB-254, and BB-255. To date, no examples of the BB-253 variety have been located or proved to exist. It is especially interesting that the two 1802/1 overdates were actually minted before the 1801 BB-212 dollars.
This is a splendid example with rich gold toning over nearly full luster. A few minor marks are visible, but none are obvious. This is a clear overdate, with the previous digit 1 boldly visible beneath the 2. We find it curious that there are actually five different overdate varieties, each from a different overdated die. Apparently the Mint was planning a much larger mintage of 1801-dated silver dollars. From the usual die state with a short but heavy crack across the right side of the bust.
