1802/1 $5 XF45 PCGS. B. 1-A, Miller-49, R.8. This is a very rare die variety and the first we have offered for sale at public auction since the AU58 in our 1997 September Long Beach Sale. Miller claims only two examples are known in his 1997 reference, but we suspect several others have been discovered since. The diagnostics are numerous and quite clear on the coin. The leaf on the reverse points between the R and I in AMERICA, the right top of the U in UNITED is weak or missing. The most telling diagnostics, though, are the die cracks which appear on the reverse: the $ sign die break through the first S in STATES, a crack through the feet of the C in AMERICA to the lowest berry and branch, and another from a leaf to the shield through the right side of the shield, through the ribbon at the M in UNUM to star 11. The coin itself is well centered and shows rich green-gold coloration with a reddish accent around the devices. Lightly abraded in the left and right obverse fields, the devices are well defined with very little softness of strike evident. From the JLW Illinois Collection.
