1802/1 $5 MS64 PCGS. B. 2-H, Miller-54, R.4. Boldly st 1802/1[$5] MS64 PCGS.
1802/1<$5> MS64 PCGS. B. 2-H, Miller-54, R.4. Boldly struck in spite of its rather advanced die state, with nearly obligatory die clashing seen in the form of faint horizontal lines in Liberty's hair. The vibrant, frosty luster is enhanced by a delicate coating of reddish patina, although tinges of olive color can also be found about the edges. Wispy blemishes on either side of the portrait and a thin reeding mark down from the curls over Liberty's ear are all that inhibit Gem status.
Two obverse dies and a total of eight die marriages were used to strike the 1802/1 which, along with the 1800, is the most frequently encountered Capped Bust Half Eagle. One obverse features a centered overdigit, while those utilizing the second die, as on this example, has the final 2 entered mostly right of the underdigit 1. The reverse can be identified by a paper-thin extension or spine from a leaf tip to the R in AMERICA. Except for the earliest die states of the B. 2-H, a die crack can be seen from the reverse border at 7 o'clock into UNITED. Here the crack advances through all six letters. Population: 18 in 64, 1 finer (11/05).
From The Guadalupe Collection.
