<B>1802/1 $5 AU58 PCGS.</B></I> Breen-6440, BD-1, High R.4. The half eagles of this date have provided a challenge to numismatists attempting to sort out the known varieties from those that are listed but don't exist. The efforts of John Dannreuther, with the notes of Harry Bass, have done much to set the record straight. Two overdate obverse dies are known, with a centered or high 2 in the date. This first obverse has the overdated digit 2 centered between the bust and the border. Five reverse dies were combined with this obverse, and three reverse dies were combined with the high overdate obverse for a total of eight die marriages that are currently known. This near-Mint example has attractive greenish yellow-gold surfaces with reflective fields on both sides.
