1802/1<$5> AU55 NGC. B. 1-D, Breen-6440, Miller-47, Bass-3073, R.4. Two different obverse dies are known for the half eagle coinage of 1802, and both are 1802/1 overdates. Breen's obverse 1 has the final digit low and well separated from the bust, while his obverse 2 has the digit high and (virtually) joined to the bust. The small die chip above the left wingtip and the incomplete ribbon loop in the eagle's beak immediately confirm the reverse of this variety. This die combination is easily the single most common variety of the date. A few minor surface marks and light scratches can be seen on each side. This example has light greenish-gold surfaces with considerable satiny luster.
