1802/1 $2 1/2 --Mount Removed--NCS. Genuine. Breen-6118, BD-1, R.4. This is the so-called Spike Shield (BD-1) pairing, distinguished by a thick spine of metal that travels from the left upper shield corner to the eagle's left (facing) wing. Although this issue, with all three varieties for the year produced from a single obverse die, has often been called an overdate, many authorities now doubt its overdate status. A jewelry mount has been rather crudely removed from the upper obverse rim in two places, resulting in some damage, and the piece was brightly cleaned at one time. The coin is about XF40 in terms of detail, with moderate highpoint wear and scattered small abrasions that appear under a loupe. An affordable specimen of this very scarce die pairing.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
