Bright yellow-gold surfaces display obligatory softness in the centers and show minor scuffiness along with an occasional pinscratch in the fields. The most obvious distraction appears to possibly be Mint-caused, that being a small depression beneath Liberty's chin. The ES in STATES is widely spaced, and the upright of the E is centered between a pair of clouds. The eagle's lower beak is extended due to a minor engraving blunder. The scarcest of three die marriages for the year. While all 1802 Quarter Eagles are traditionally referred to as overdates, no examples are known that display an irrefutable underdigit, and many numismatists regard the final digit as merely repunched. Despite a stingy mintage of 3,035 pieces, three die marriages are known for the 1802, all of which share a common obverse.
