1802/1 $2 1/2 AU50 PCGS. Breen-6118, Bass-3007, R.4. There are three known die marriages of the 1802/1 Quarter Eagle, all of which are 1802/1 overdates. It is probable that the Mint used a single obverse die mated with three reverse dies for this issue. This may seem odd for an early gold coin with a paltry original mintage of 3,035 pieces. The 1802/1 is the most frequently offered Capped Bust Right Quarter Eagle after the final-year 1807. This is a vivid survivor with dominant copper-gold coloration. Flickers of lilac tinged iridescence shimmer at the denticles as the coin turns into the light. The strike is average for the date with some bluntness of detail noted in the center of the reverse. All other features, however, are appreciably bold with light rub across the highpoints. There are no singularly distracting abrasions. We have handled only one other certified About Uncirculated 1802/1 Quarter Eagle over the past ten years, and it was certified AU50 by NGC: Ex: April 1994 Central States Bullet Auction (Heritage, 4/94), lot 589.From the William C.
