1801 S-214 R3 PCGS graded MS62+ BrownLustrous light to medium brown and light olive with generous traces of mint red on the reverse. Frosty with no trace of friction or rub, but the strike is soft on the bust tip and the opposing area at S-O (as usually seen on this variety, a condition noted on page 614 in the Breen encyclopedia). There are some small spots of slightly darker toning at the end of the bust along with some tiny planchet chips in the area due to the soft strike there. The best identifying mark is a small nick under the right side of the N in ONE. M-LDS, Breen state II, with obvious die rust in the field left of the hair ribbon and die cracks on the reverse. Graded MS61 and CC#3 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 and CC#3, his photo #32606. Our grade is MS60+. This is the plate coin for the die variety in the 2000 Breen encyclopedia on the cents of 1793 to 1814.Certificate Number: 36239.62+/57538520Pedigree: Ex Carl Wurtzbach-Charles Wheeler, 1976 ANA Sale (Stack's), lot 353-William R.
