<B>1801 S$1 XF45 NGC.</B></I> B-3, BB-213, R.3. Die State II. This is the first Die State II in the BB reference. Both 1s in date equidistant from curl and bust; right base of each T is missing. In one of those typographical errors that drive all authors insane, five different die states for the 1801 B-3, BB-213 silver dollar in the Bowers <I>Silver Dollar Encyclopedia</B></I> are numbered I, II, II, II, and III, suggesting that the present cataloger could have done a better job proofreading! The B-3 variety represents the final use of this obverse die and the only use of the reverse die. The reverse has a light clash mark from the ribbon over M to star 6, above the right wing. It appears that this reverse die was engraved at about the same time as the obverse die for 1802 B-6 was engraved, as both dies utilized the same broken T punch. Although the order that dies were engraved is not necessarily the order they were used, this evidence suggests that the reverse of this 1801 die was probably not engraved until 1802. Light gray surfaces with intermingled lilac, gold, russet, and green toning on each side. A few faint hairlines and minor surface marks are evident upon close inspection.
