1801 S$1 XF40 ICG. B-1, BB-211, R.3. Die State V. Reiv
1801 S$1 XF40 ICG. B-1, BB-211, R.3. Die State V. Reiver Die State c. Both 1s in date equidistant from curl and bust; leaf left of center below I. This is the latest die state with a large bulge at MER, a die state that had not been seen by Bowers when his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia was published in 1993. The obverse has a fine die crack left of the date, slanting down to the border, and light clash marks through the date and elsewhere. The reverse has prominent clash marks through TED, above ES, and at OF, this last clash mark sometimes described as a die crack, which it is not. A heavy die crack begins through STA and continues through the clouds to the right wing and AM. The bulge at MER suggests that the present coin is one of the last that was struck from this die. Pleasing pewter-gray surfaces with darker steel toning around the peripheral devices and lighter silver-gray on the devices. Lightly cleaned but not obviously evident. Scattered surface marks and a few minor scratches on the reverse. Silver dollars dated 1801 are much scarcer than many other years, due to lower mintages caused by an increase in the price of silver. The value of silver in each silver dollar exceeded face value, causing reduced demand for coins of this denomination.
Ex: I.
