1801 S$1 VF25 ANACS. B-2, BB-212, R.3. Die State III. Both 1s in date equidistant from curl and bust; leaf below left serif of I. The obverse of this late die state has been lapped, removing some clash marks that appeared earlier. The reverse has a short die crack from the second feather to the border at 10 o'clock. Dentils at the left wing are long (later states show evidence of lapping with shorter dentils) and faint flowlines join the top feather to the border, just above the die crack from the second feather. A tiny die chip appears to connect the left base of the first A in AMERICA to the feather below it. This reverse die was used for six different die marriages dated 1801, 1802, and 1803 (an additional 1803 variety is now believed nonexistent).
Understanding the various die states of early U.S. coins ranks among the most challenging aspects of numismatics. Several students of the series report that this 1801 variety was coined after the 1802 overdates, but examples in the Luebke collection suggest a different order. In his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, Bowers reported the order of striking as 1802/1 (two varieties), 1801, 1802, and 1803 (two varieties). However, the Luebke coins suggest that the order was 1801, 1802/1, 1802, and 1803. It now appears that the emission sequence might be 1801 B-2, 1802/1 B-1, 1802/1 B-4, 1802 B-6, 1803 B-4, and 1803 B-6, or in exactly the order Bolender (and thus Haseltine before him) described.
Lightly cleaned with finely hairlined surfaces. The obverse has medium gray color and the reverse is two-toned, with light silver color in the fields and pewter-gray on the devices.
Ex: eBay (10/2001).
From The William Luebke Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
