1801<S$1> MS63 PCGS. B-2, BB-212, R.2.Toned with deep gray throughout, with fiery orange-gold hues jumping out from the protected areas. These iridescent colors are seen on both the obverse and reverse, and add greatly to the appeal of this particular coin. Rarely are 1801 Bust dollars found in grades even approaching Mint State, and this very attractive example shows lustrous features that will surely capture the heart of any numismatist that takes the time to view the coin. Ample luster peeks through the toning to please the eye. The surfaces show scattered handling nicks, as expected for the grade, and this coin is identifiable by a horizontal nick on the center of the E in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a similar tiny tick resides just below the midpoint of the post of the F in OF. Both dies show clash marks, and there is a minor die crack left of the date in the field. One of the finest seen of this date, with the combined NGC and PCGS Population Reports noting 3 coins graded this high, with just 2 specimens seen in finer grades. Certainly not many to go around for any collector to choose from. An important opportunity for the date or type collector who desires a Mint State coin.
From The Jack Lee Collection, III
