1801<S$1> MS63 NGC. B-2, BB-212, R.3. This variety shows the distance from the 1 in the date to the curl being about the same as the distance from star 8 to the upper right serif of Y in LIBERTY, and the 01 in the date closer than the 180. On the reverse, the point of the leftmost arrowhead is under the left edge of the left serif of N in UNITED. Also, the first A in AMERICA touches the third feather, and is connected by a die crack to the fourth feather, and the leaf points more towards the left of the base of I in AMERICA.
Mint Records indicate that 54,454 silver dollars were coined during the 1801 calendar year, however, the most likely number of dollars struck with the actual 1801 date, according to David Bowers in his 1993 Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the U.S., is probably around 35,000 pieces. This coinage was accomplished through the use of two obverse and four reverse dies. A total of four varieties were coined, and each is more or less the same rarity. Perhaps 2,000 to 3,000 1801 silver dollars still exist today in all grades, with Mint State examples being major rarities. Indeed, NGC and PCGS combined have certified just 11 Mint State specimens. Likewise, our records indicate that 11 Uncirculated pieces have appeared at auction over the past 20 or so years.
This is a remarkable specimen. Bright silvery surfaces are visited by whispers of pastel cobalt-blue, lilac, and golden-brown toning. The design elements are well centered on the planchet, and are sharply struck. The star centers are nearly full, and most of Liberty's hair displays nice definition, though that next to the forehead is weak. The eagle's breast and neck feathers are also soft. There are no adjustment marks evident on either side. A few minute marks are noted on Liberty's cheek and neck and in the obverse fields. Census: 3 in 63, 1 finer (11/05).
