1801 S$1 MS60 NGC. B-3, BB-213, R.3. The small dot to
1801 S$1 MS60 NGC. B-3, BB-213, R.3. The small dot to the left of the center dot immediately identifies this obverse, which was paired with three different reverses to create the B-1 through B-3. The distance from the 1 in the date to the curl is about the same as the distance from star 8 to the serif of the Y. On the reverse a star point touches the outside of upper part of the beak, and all the T's are missing their right feet (the result of a defective punch). The star under cloud 7 is double-punched.
This is the so-called "second" Die State II as outlined in the Bowers-Borckardt reference (because of a typo in the text), with bold clash marks visible throughout the reverse. However, some of those clash marks are not in their expected locations, because the obverse die clashed at least once off-center compared with the reverse die. The obverse stars 1 through 7 are visible clashed at (reading backwards on the reverse), respectively, the first S in STATES (but too close to the edge); the left (facing) wing tip (moving inward, and subsequently); between D and the wing; underneath the upright of D; beneath the upright of E; and between NI. A second set of centered clash marks appears to be in the expected locations. This piece is lustrous and attractive, with a light golden-amber cast to each side. While we cannot say for certain that they are the same coin, this interesting piece appears to be quite similar, and to be of similar quality, to the Bareford B-3 specimen (Stack's, 10/1981), lot 420, also cataloged as MS60. Rare so fine.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
