1801<S$1> B-2, BB-212, R.2--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VF Details. Star 8 close to Y, star 13 distant from bust; Outer arrow point below leftmost base of N. Reiver die state a. Bowers Borckardt state III. This is the Reiver plate coin for the obverse and reverse of this variety. When this coin was struck, the obverse die had been lapped removing the multiple clash marks, but leaving a single clashmark above Liberty's chest (the eagle's wing). The die crack is very faint left of the date, and we note some die rust seen around the inside points of stars eleven and twelve. On the reverse there is a short die crack from the second feather of the left wing tip to the rim. The surfaces and color of this coin are not displeasing, and with time it should recover if allowed to retone naturally.
Bowers and Borckardt note that this reverse die was paired with several obverse dies over three years, interestingly, this 1801 dollar was actually coined after two of the 1802/1 varieties. When this obverse die was retired, the reverse was later used to coin 1803 dollars as well.
No provenance information was included with this coin. Envelope Included.
