1801<S$1> AU58 PCGS. B-3, BB-213, R.3. In 1801, Mint Records indicate that 54,454 silver dollars were coined during the calendar year, however, the most likely number of dollars struck with the actual 1801 date in probably only around 30,000 to 35,000 pieces. This coinage was accomplished through the use of two obverse and four reverse dies. A total of four varieties were coined, and each is more or less the same rarity. Perhaps 2,000 to 3,000 1801 silver dollars still exist today in all grades, with Mint State examples being major rarities, and AU coins proving to be quite elusive today. Based on the study of die deterioration, including clash marks, repolishing, die cracks, and other factors, it can be shown that most of the 1801-dated silver dollars, including all of the BB-213 variety, were actually struck in 1802. It is probably the case that most, if not all, of the 54,454 coins produced during 1801 were actually silver dollars dated 1800.
This is a remarkable 1801 Silver Dollar with nearly complete luster and vivid gold toning, providing exceptional aesthetic appeal. Only slight traces of wear are visible on the highest design points on each side, with virtually imperceptible abrasions. This is a later die state example with prominent clash marks and tiny die flaws or dots through the legends. Population: 12 in 58, 5 finer (8/05).
