1801 S$1 AU58 NGC. B-1, BB-211, R.3. Die State II. This is Bolender's so-called "Wide Date" variety for 1801. This obverse was used to strike three die marriages with this date. On the reverse, which was only used to strike this variety, the lowest arrowhead ends at approximately the center of the U in UNITED. 1801 Dollars appear less frequently than Dollars dated 1795, 1798, 1799 and 1800, and as a result realize slightly higher prices when offered. There are a number of 1801 B-1, BB-211 Dollars listed in the Bowers' book under "Notable Specimens." It would be fun (and perhaps worthwhile) to see if this specimen is the same as one of those listed in the book. Almost Mint State, the surfaces retain a significant amount of mint luster on each side, especially on the reverse. Just a bit softly struck in the centers with strong peripheral details, each side is brilliant with the exception of a streak of dark gray around 3 o'clock on the obverse and an occasional dab of golden on the right side of the reverse. A very shallow scratch runs across the middle portion of Liberty's hair, and there is a tiny planchet void out of the upper left obverse field, these being the most readily identifiable marks for pedigree purposes. From the Albany Collection.
