1801<H10C> AU Details, Obverse Graffiti NCS. V-1,2 LM-2, R.4. For quite some time, the 1801 Half Dimes have been the source of considerable confusion. Valentine listed two varieties, but recently it has been shown that these are from the same pair of dies, in various die states. To add to this confusion, a new and totally different variety was discovered in 1987. The new Logan-McCloskey Half Dime reference has detailed information regarding both of the currently known varieties, their identification, and die states. This bright silver example has nearly full luster with a faint "18" engraved in the right obverse field. Other minor imperfections are visible. From an intermediate and lapped die state with a small bulge near the tip of the bust, and another at RT of LIBERTY. The reverse has a narrow rim break over E of UNITED, and both sides have moderate clash marks. The obverse is also minutely doubled.
Ex: Stack's session of Auction '86.
From The William A. Harmon Collection of United States Half Dimes.
