1801<1C> S-222, B-15, High R.1--Scratched--NCS. VG Details. VG7 EAC. Die State IV. The obverse of this variety has blunt 1's in the date, with the digits aligned at the top. The denominator is spaced 1 00. This coin has a large rim break above NIT, with what looks like a small adjacent die chip that grazes the top left serif of the E. The break extends from the right serif of U past the upright of E and downward to touch both right serifs of N and the entire area above IT. Walter Breen's large cent Encyclopedia calls this die state "extremely rare," noting that two are known. The Appendix to Sheldon's Penny Whimsy notes one specimen only from Die State IV "with a rim break touching the tops of NIT," discovered after the previous Early American Coppers had gone to press. This example has three light scratches in the obverse fields, two before, one behind Liberty's head, that are a bit longer than Liberty's neck. Two small planchet digs are on each side of LIBERTY. The reverse has more and larger scratches, the longest two about spanning the width of the wreath. These scratches are not overly distracting, however, and are more noticeable with a glass than without. The coin is on a glossy dark-brown planchet, with a bold date and LIBERTY and some deep hair details remaining. The drapery end, face, upper right wreath details and S OF are weak from axial die misalignment. An attractive level of detail remains on both sides, however, and the large rim break is bold.
Ex: William R.T. Smith (8/24/1977). Envelope Included.
