1801<1C> 100/000. S-221, B-5, Low R.2--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. AU Details. VF20 EAC. Die State IV. This coin has chestnut-brown surfaces that when rotated under a light emit an unnatural, light copper-red luster. Despite this evidence of cleaning, though, this is a lovely and appealing coin, well detailed, well struck, and virtually mark-free, even when perused under magnification. On the obverse the long, straight die scratch running through the hair to the ribbon is clear. There is a razor-sharp delineation of Liberty's hair from the forehead. Even though light evidence of rub shows on the hair's highest points, the small forelocks on the cheek and neck exhibit unusually fine detail. The hair strands show bold separation throughout. The drapery is sculpted and robust, with no weak spots at the bust end. On the reverse some of the lower leaf pairs are not fully separated, but most of the upper leaves show their central veins. The correction fraction is boldly impressed. The coin is well centered, with all obverse dentilation showing. The reverse dentilation is weak only above IT. This coin is apparently from early in Die State III, for it exhibits no obvious evidence of obverse clash marks, but there are two narrow rim breaks, one above the space to the right of OF, a second above AM, with dentils present in between. A delightful coin despite the "improvement" attempt.
Ex: Olson; George Ramont (1/3/1969). Envelope Included.
